PLEASE TURN YOUR ANTENNAS TO GREECE

The trigger to write this article came up while I was QRV at the IARU R1 VHF Contest. Unfortunately Greece lies at the edge of the european VHF activity. Our presence is hardly known and thus we miss precious QSOs as the northern hams do not even try to listen us.

As an operator of SZ8L station during the IARU R1 VHF Contest, I managed to work lots of Ι,9A,S5,E7,YU,LZ,9H stations with fantastic incoming signals peaking 59+ but I lost the chance to work more of them since they didn't know the existence of my station and they never bothered to turn their antennas to the south !

There is a great advantage that we should make use of it to the maximum; between us we have the Ionian and Adriatic Sea where sea propagation assists towards long-distance QSOs at VHF-UHF.

During IARU R1 VHF Contest our station managed to have as the best QRB/QSO was 587km/qso, and out of 101 (94 valid) QSOs the 20 where longer than 1000km. Although there was "quality" at the contacts, quantity was missing. This gave us a rank close to lower end since the number of the QSOs was small ! http://hrvhf.net/contest.php

Our station was QRV from KM08hr, so called "Profitis Ilias" summit, 1000m asl at Lefkada island.

Our working conditions included a 4x8el I0JXX antennas, Kenwood TS-2000, preamplifier and power amplifier. You can find uploaded videos of the activity in question if you make a search at youtube with SZ8L as keyword.

During the past years there has been a significant progress at VHF in Greece. There are many active stations equipped good enough to work es, tropo, ms, eme, cw and digi. Some of them are: SV8CS, SV2JL,SW6KRV, SW6KRW, SW6IED, SV2DCD,SV2RM, SV1BTR, SV1BJY, SV1OAA, SV8GKE, SV3AAF, SV9CVY, SW1JGW,SV3JBU, SV3CYM,SV9IOA and others.

At least twice per year you may find lots of SV stations QRV portable from mountaintops and they manage to work very good QSOs. Once is at Aegean VHF Contest during the 1st weekend of July and the other is during the IARU R1 VHF Contest which is concurrent with the Greek VHF Contest.

Furthermore, there is a newly-founded club, Athens QRP Net (AqrpN) which organizes a biannual VHF QSO Party. The parties take place once during Autumn and once during Spring time. There are several hams from Turkey who joined the ranks of AqrpN and they also started to be very active on the bands as well.

At UHF spectrum the activity can be mainly found on EME rather than on terrestrial.

During the past 2 years there were also 2 solely VHF+ expeditions launched: The first on 2010 at Othoni island, using the call SY8VHF and was operated by SV1BJY, SV3CYM and SV8GKE. We managed to work about 1800 QSOs from JM99qu locator on 6m, 2m, 70cm and 23cm.

Among those QSOs there are the QSOs with 9A2WA SSB 70cm and 9A7B CW 23cm which are both two first QSOs between 9A-SV.

On 2011 there was another expedition launched SY9VHF and the team was comprised by SV1BJY, SV8GKE and SV2HWR. We were QRV from KM15ti, 1200m asl, worked 2860 QSOs at 6m, 4m, 2m, 70cm, 23cm and 3cm. There we also managed to work first QSOs between SV9 and SV at 10GHz and we also managed to work 3 EME CW QSOs.

Although at both expetiditions we operated using portable stations, our equipment was good enough to log remarkable QSOs.

You can search for related videos at youtube under the keywords sy8vhf, sy9vhf.

We hope that our team will manage to organize another good VHF-UHF-SHF expedition at a good QTH for our 9A friends so that we will manage to establish a first 9A-SV QSO at 10GHz. However now it's too early to know if, when and where would such a project take place, considering what happens lately in Greece.

Maybe JM99 would be a good idea..

In order to check the propagation towards SV you may use the following beacons:

144450 SV2JL/B – KN10NO

144440 SV2DCD/B - KN00LI

144488 SV3AQR/B - KM07QS

144407 SV8GKE/B - KM08HQ 1150m a.s.l

1296831 SV8GKE/B - KM08HQ 1150m a.s.l

The SV8GKE beacons at 2m and 23cm thanks to their favorable geographic position, they have almost daily reception reports from I3, I0, I4, TK, 9A, 9H at distances greater than 1000km.

Therefore let me finish the way I started writing this article: turn your antennas towards Greece and be sure that you will log a good QSO !
